Wyomissing Hills Elementary Center recently participated in the Hour of Code, a week-long celebration of computer science and coding. Students in kindergarten through fourth-grade enjoyed grade level computer science activities teaching them the basics of coding.
The Hour of Code is a global movement sponsored by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org that reaches tens of millions of students in 180 countries.
During the event, held in the school’s STEAM Explorations classroom, students began their introduction to coding with “unplugged” (without a device) activities. Unplugged activities enable students to understand technology fully before tackling more advanced activities. This foundation enables students to excel in their STEAM Explorations classes, which will introduce coding in the new year. STEAM Explorations teacher Dr. Toni Wengerd led the Hour of Code.
“The Hour of Code enables all students to try something they have never done before,” explains assistant principal Dr. Robert Kucharczuk. “Tese activities are opening the students’ eyes ... showing them that the possibilities are endless.”
