Hello, WHEC Families,
We are off to a fantastic start!
The excitement and positive energy around our school and community have been incredible. Thank you for helping us begin the year on such a strong note—we are eager to keep that momentum going as we head into October.
This month, students will continue to grow as learners, form new friendships, and build meaningful connections with their teachers. October also brings a few special events to look forward to:
-
Walk with Wyo – October 17
-
Halloween Parade – October 31 (morning)
We’re also excited to welcome our Watch Dog Dads program. Sign-ups will be available in Parent Square this week. Please remember that all volunteers must have completed and approved clearances through the District office.
Be sure to take a look at our October Newsletter, which includes important dates and resources to support both students and families.
It has been a great beginning to the school year, and we are excited for everything the months ahead will bring.
Wishing you a wonderful fall season!
Dr. Redcay

From the School Counselors
|
Guidance lessons have started! Mrs. Cheslock will go into each classroom once a month to teach lessons on feelings, friendship, careers, and making good choices.
The first lesson for K-2 was learning about how a school counselor helps students. We also played a fun game that focused on community building.
Details and pictures of monthly guidance lessons will be posted on Parent Square!

Mrs. Stem-Zmoda teaches Classroom Guidance Lessons (called REACH) to every third and fourth grade classroom. Lessons are on a wide variety of topics - like test-taking skills, learning about careers, goal setting, understanding our emotions, growing our coping skills toolbox, how to solve conflicts, and much more!
Grade 3 & 4 Families: Look for ParentSquare posts from Mrs. Stem-Zmoda about each lesson throughout the month!
Topics covered in September
- Grade 3 - Meet Your School Counselor; Growth Mindset (Bubble Gum Brain)
- Grade 4 - Self-Care & Self-Advocacy; Executive Functioning (Self-Control, Flexible Thinking, Planning)

The Spartan Skills program at Wyomissing Hills teaches students life skills and practices. Each month, there are different skills that students will learn and practice. Staff will award golden tickets to students displaying the skill of the month. Golden tickets are picked randomly for a reward during the Spartan Spirit assemblies. All golden tickets will be sent home at the end of each month so families can see what their students have accomplished!
October’s Spartan Skill is Conflict Resolution.
We will focus on learning how to solve problems, communicate our feelings, compromise, apologize, and so much more!

It’s time for School Screenings!
- The Pennsylvania Public School Code requires screenings as a part of health services for all school-aged children. The school nurse will perform growth, vision, and hearing screenings for all students in K-3. 4th grade receives growth and vision screenings.
- You will be notified after screening if your child needs further evaluation by your doctor.
- All parents receive growth - bmi letters.

WHEC is WILD about A Boy Called Bat! |
WHEC wrapped up our A Boy Called Bat adventure with an AMAZING surprise assembly! Raven Ridge Wildlife Center visited our school with some very special guests—including a real live skunk named Monster! They also introduced us to a hawk, a barn owl, a black vulture, and two box turtles.
A huge thank you to Dr. Redcay and Mrs. Kersikoski for going above and beyond to bring this unforgettable experience to our school. Their support made our skunk adventure a wild success!
Students and teachers alike agreed—it was the perfect way to celebrate the end of our reading journey.

As we partner in your child’s learning journey, one valuable resource you can use at home is IXL, a platform available on your child’s iPad. IXL offers engaging and personalized practice in both Math and ELA, aligned with what your child is learning in class. Encourage your child to spend 10–15 minutes each day practicing a skill in Math or ELA. IXL adapts to their level, so it’s always the right challenge for them! This is entirely optional, but is a great way to utilize technology to build skills.
There are also many opportunities to learn and practice skills away from the screen. Here are some activities to complement your child’s learning:
-
Math in Action: Use everyday opportunities like grocery shopping to practice skills. For example, ask your child to total items in the cart or make change from a pretend budget.
-
Word Play: Create a “Word Detective” game where your child finds new words in books, signs, or magazines and writes them down to discuss their meaning.
-
Family Story Hour: Take turns reading aloud as a family, or encourage your child to read a story to a younger sibling. This builds fluency and confidence.
-
Cooking and Measuring: Let your child help measure ingredients while cooking or baking. This reinforces fractions and measurement skills in a hands-on way.
Balancing technology and real-world activities ensures your child continues to grow as a learner. Thank you for supporting their learning at home!
If you have questions about IXL or need more ideas, contact your child’s teacher.

All volunteers must have current clearances on file and be approved by the School Board in order to volunteer directly with our students.
Complete the WHEC Volunteer Agreement and Confidentiality form and return it to the WHEC Main Office. We will not hold a monthly volunteer or Watch Dog training as we have in the past, but we ask that you review our agreement and expectations before returning the form.
Once those documents and clearances are on file and the Board of Directors has approved you, you can sign up for classroom opportunities and a day for our Watch Dog Dads.

Walk with Wyo is Coming Up!
Mark your calendars for October 17. Our first major event of the year is Walk with Wyo, our primary fundraiser. We’re looking for support through corporate sponsorships, donations, and day-of volunteers to help make this event a success. Packets will be assembled soon for distribution at WHEC, and volunteer spots will be prioritized for those who have already expressed interest. If you’d like to sponsor, donate, or lend a hand, please email walkwithwyo@gmail.com.
Support the WHEC Prize Cart
The Prize Cart is one of the highlights for our students, giving them a chance to celebrate their hard work with rewards that make them smile. You can help keep it stocked and exciting by donating from our Amazon Wishlist. Every contribution brings joy and encouragement to our kids.

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) identifies students who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, and/or academic difficulties which pose a barrier to learning and academic success.
There may be times when you do not know how to help your child. This is okay and someone else may know how to help. Contact your child’s school counselor or use this link to request the SAP process.
